Pleasants County Historical Society
About Us
The Pleasants County Historical Society was organized in 1973, with the main goal of preserving the history of Pleasants County for ourselves and our posterity. They began by collecting pictures, books, articles, old tools and other memorabilia. These items were placed in their room at the Pleasants County Community Center. After an arduous process with untold hours, a history of the people of Pleasants County to 1980 was published.
In 1980,The Historical Society elected Walter Carpenter president with the ultimate dream of having a building that would serve as a museum. Walter served as President until 2000 when upon his retirement Gerald Bills was elected president & served till 2019. It wasn’t until during the term of Larry Butcher (2020-2022) in 2021, that Pam McFarland secured a donation from Mrs. Rebecca Deem of the Old Fleming Store that the dream would become a reality. After a year of renovation by Charley Elder the doors officially opened on May 7, 2022.
However, as thrilled as Gerald was with the museum, he was disappointed that there was not space for his beloved farm equipment. Although Gerald’s prestigious career was in D.C. being a leader for IBM in development of the computer, far from his farming roots, he had a dream to preserve items from his childhood for posterity, especially the youth. Sharing this dream with his brother, John R. “Johnny Bob” Bills, who had purchased the Quonset Hut to support the alumni association, resulted in December 2022 that Gerald received the best Christmas present ever when Johnny Bob donated the building to the society. Although he did not live to see the doors open on the Museum on September 16, 2023, he did enjoy seeing the parade of farm equipment pass his home especially the 1927 Fordson tractor to make his dream come true!
Today, we are proud to have 2 museums that are open to the public to preserve our history. We are very appreciative of all the donations & welcome everyone to join us in our efforts to preserve our history for posterity. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that meets the third Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at the Pleasants County Senior Center.

Charley Elder
Old Farm Museum Curator
Charley was elected the Old Farm Museum curator in 2023. He had not only renovated the 2nd Street Museum but also stabilized, renovated, & updated the electrical service with help from Claude Rolston at the Quonset Hut for our Old Farm Museum. Then he has gathered, repaired, refurbished & transported almost every piece of farm equipment at the museum.
Pamela McFarland
Second St. Museum Curator
Pam was another one of Dr. Hamilton’s deliveries. She was raised on Rt.16 in Pleasants County and is a 1967 graduate of SMHS. Her career entailed being a beautician and a Sheriff’s deputy prior to her retirement. She has been an active member of the historical society for many years working on numerous projects including the mobile museum. She knew the dream of the leaders, Walter Carpenter & Gerald Bills, was to have a building to house a museum. She had spent many years pursuing a donation of a building to the extent that she was making contacts to purchase one that she could donate. She & the society were thrilled when they received the Old Fleming Store donation from Rebecca Deem. She was instrumental in securing the legal documents to make the donation a reality for not only the Deem donation but also for the donation of the Quonset Hut by Johnny Bob Bills. Within a year, who would believe that we would go from no museum to having 2 museums. It was wonderful when a Curator was needed for the Second Street Museum that she accepted & was elected.
