CHUMMY CHATS

To make “Chummy Chats” available to the community, the Pleasants County Historical Society has completed a formidable project to create a scanned format of the documents along with copies in book format that are available for review in the Walter Carpenter Genealogy Room at the Pleasants County Library.

“Chummy Chats” were a daily log kept by Clyde Cornell who worked at Quaker State Refinery.  Clyde was born May 16, 1882 and died on August 2, 1957. He retired from the DUBBS crew in 1952 with 35 years of service.  It appears that he posted his daily logs that consisted of one page for each day of the year on a company bulletin board.  Each day he recorded the weather and some information about operations and personnel at Quaker State. Dependent upon space he would complete his daily update with community information, updates about friends and family or national news i.e.  war updates.

His twelve logs that were donated to the Pleasants County Historical Society provide a unique slice of history regarding the life and times in Pleasants County from 1941 to 1952.  The logs are compiled in a variety of ways from a two-ring scrapbook to covers created from a piece of conveyor belt that used toggle bolts or nuts & bolts with washers to create the yearly book. One year, 1947, had a conveyor belt book cover with lettering painted by Robert W. Snyder for his friend Chummy Chats.

Here, due to limited space, we provide a sample of the books highlighting 1949. If you wish a digital copy of the entire series, please go to contact on this site & email us or contact Pam at the Second St. Museum  (304)665-2894.
